Flood lights are a kind of wide-beam light that has been around for several decades. Outdoor flood lights have been used in particular since the nineteen fifties, when they were first applied to outdoor lighting for the purposes of sporting events. Floodlights are very strong lights that project their flood lighting footprint over a wide area. It can be painful to the eyes to stare directly into the light sources of floodlights, but in general floodlights are positioned high above the ground so that they can produce a lighting effect similar to the sun and not irritate the vision of the people who are running around down below.
With more people becoming aware of the hazards of current fossil fuel consumption to the future of the environment on Earth, sporting concerns have become interested as well and some have started to switch to the solar flood light; a solar powered flood light can produce the same amount of light with a combination of solar powered flood lights being run off of batteries that are charged during the day, and some reinforcing power from the mains that can make up for any run off in the level of the solar flood lights' power. A solar security flood light is just the same as a regular security flood light triggered by motion or by an operator, except it uses the power of a sunlight charged solar battery to run the floodlights.
Some brands of floodlights that are popular and in use today include the Bell Flood Howell light and the Tilley floodlight projector. There are also new kinds of floodlight technology being put into use such as LED flood lights; LED floodlights give off a wide full spectrum of balanced light and with recent advances in the technology used to produce and manufacture LEDs it is possible to run them for less cost than the equivalent incandescent or halogen light. This kind of technology is also used more and more these days for powering portable floodlights, as the LED light sources do not run down the batteries on portable floodlights as quickly as the other kinds of lighting elements that may be considered, and the LED beam is very strong, sharp and clear. All in all, floodlights have managed to come a long way as far as the technology that is used to produce them and the quality of light that they provide for outdoor events.
